Science Fiction or Horror?

As I’m sitting here in my recliner, I’m thinking how thankful I am to have a skill in which I’m able to bring images and visions to life in the form of art through paintings.
I’m also thinking of the Syfy and Horror movies I grew up on watching. I can thank my father, God rest his soul, for my love of the arts of Hollywood. He was a science fiction and horror movie fanatic!
He loved the Godzilla, King Kong, Dracula, Frankenstein and The Wolf Man movies!
His favorite creature of all Syfy and Horror movies, was, The Creature From The Black Lagoon.
The Gillman happens to be my favorite as well. I love Syfy and Horror movies!
When I started out drawing at the age of six, I loved what I can bring to paper and get the praises of my drawings from my family. My dad was my biggest fan as my mom was a fan also but was my biggest critic! I’m glad she was, looking back, because not knowing then what I learned throughout my many years of drawing is that she was making me stronger and more skillful in my art. Perhaps my mother seen in me what I didn’t know, was to become an artist.
Many people are Godzilla fans. Many are Kind Kong fans. I’m a Creature From The Black Lagoon Fan.
So I always wondered, is the Gillman, Horror or Science Fiction or maybe a bit of both?
As years went by, I was excited to be able to draw my favorite monster movie character, The Creature From The Black Lagoon!
I really have to say I have very good friends. They gave me such nice compliments on my very first drawing of the Gillman. I wish I still had that drawing to show you because it looked like Sh*t! A big FLOP. LOL
It was a pencil drawing and I had challenged one of my artist friends  Liam to a Gillman contest. Let me tell you this, his drawing of the creature made my drawing of the creature look like it drowned ten times over!
I didn’t attempt to redraw the creature after seeing his drawing compared to mine.
I still remember the words my friend Liam had told me after our contest of drawing the creature. He told me to never compare myself to another artist’s work. If I continue to do so, I’ll never find my true skill at drawing because I’ll always feel like I couldn’t be a success.
I’m not certain if he even remembers telling me those words but I do because it stuck with me even until now.
I truly thank him for that golden advice.
Liam is a HUGE Godzilla fan, and, I believe he has his own science fiction page dedicated to Godzilla.
Now it wasn’t until nearly 10 years later did I attempt to try drawing The Creature once again. This time all in color pencil. Another FLOP! I just couldn’t get the look of the creature down the way he should look. That drawing can be found on my Instagram page. I guess I can screenshot the drawing and show it to you on here. Ok, hopefully that worked and you should be able to find the drawing below. It was many years ago drawn.
Well, yes you guessed it, I’m going to reattempt The Creature! This time in a Acrylic Painting.
I love to finally be able to capture the creature as he looks back in the classic monster movies.
Follow me on Instagram or my FB art page (both Customart2Imagine) to see the progress of my third attempt at the Creature!
Sincerely,
Dave aka Customart2Imagine ©
