What Do I Choose In A Canvas? Paper Or Cotton Stretched?

What to choose is solely up to your preferences. As an Artist, I will give you tips and my preference to using both. I will also try to give you, the consumer, answers to this question and hopefully, give you a more understanding on what to purchase.

As an Artist I love and enjoy using both Canvas styles. There are many different bonds to choose from when working with Canvas Paper as there is to choose grades when working with stretched canvas.

I mainly and preferably work with Acrylics. Sometimes I choose stretched canvas and sometimes I will prefer to use paper canvas. Both are great with Acrylics and both work just as great with a liquid finisher applied to after the painting is finished. That’s the Artist in me liking this.

I like using paper canvases to paint on when making window art. Window decorations for Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. It would pretty difficult to hang canvases on a window. Right? Perhaps it could be achieved but I prefer the paper paintings going on my windows for all passerby’s to enjoy!

I enjoy painting on stretched canvases for wall art. I love covering my walls with art. Especially since they are my own artwork taken from my imagination and seeing it come to life on canvas. I do hang my paper canvases on my wall as well.

Now, for you the Consumer, here’s what I recommend for you when purchasing art directly from an Artist. If it is a must have canvas painting you want, can afford the asking price and at most times, the hefty shipping charge that goes with it, then by all means, GO FOR IT! Stretched canvas paintings are absolutely gorgeous and can definitely give your walls a beautiful makeover.

Yet, if its a budget you are on and still want beautiful paintings but without all the pricey charges that come with when choosing a stretched canvas, the paper canvas is the way to go! You still get stretched canvas quality and depending on the skills of the artist, a great beautiful painting.

Now lets talk pricing. I can only speak for myself and not for any other Artist. I use the square inch pricing method and I do not charge for time and or material costs. I charge anywhere from $0.25 to $2.00 a square inch. I also use this same pricing method for my paper canvases with the exception of, at a fraction of the cost as with a stretched canvas painting. Not only is that good to know but also, the shipping charge will be like shipping any large envelope at the post office, a fraction of the cost as shipping a stretched canvas painting.

I hope I have answered any questions about what to purchase when comes to choosing a painting you may have had. If you didn’t know about paper canvases, I’m happy I was able to enlighten you about them.

Sincerely,

Dave
