What I’m bad at drawing being an artist.

As an artist, I self-taught various skills including drawing cartoons, still life, and portraits, and experimenting with different mediums, except for oils. However, I struggle with mastering the drawing of human hands.

Most of my artworks focus on people, often omitting hands since I’m not skilled at drawing them. I recently spent a lot of time on a portrait of Prince holding his guitar, trying to make his hand and fingers look realistic.

I bought wooden articulated hand statues to learn how to draw hands, but I forgot to use them as a reference while drawing the prince portrait.

Drawing eyes, noses, and ears is easy for me, and I usually do well with lips and mouths. However, it can get tricky depending on the expression I want to capture.

As an artist, I struggle with drawing hands, which are complex and challenging to depict accurately. To improve, I need to practice drawing hands more.

Fortunately, the painting and drawing I’m working on this weekend don’t need hands. The painting features owls in flight, and the drawing is a graphite commission of Jesus Christ.

To improve my skill at drawing hands, I recognize that time, patience, and practice are essential.

Sincerely,

David L
