Life is my teacher and I still attend her classes

Daily writing prompt
Are you a lifelong learner?

I’ve come to the realization many years ago along my darkest journeys through life that life itself was and always will be my teacher. When I thought I had passed the tests I was given, life would throw a pop-up quiz at me and the questions and tasks would come even harder than the last test I had completed and passed.

Many times, I believed that this test in her class was the finals. It felt like the final exam, the ultimate test that would determine my understanding and growth—a test that would finally allow me to graduate from her relentless yet nurturing classroom of life. I sometimes would fail that test, disheartened, and would always believe the next test would be my makeup exam. I studied hard and crammed all night, losing sleep as my mind wandered with worries about my grade and whether this was indeed my moment to graduate. Yet, despite my efforts, I didn’t graduate. This cycle went on for years, resembling a Groundhog Day scenario where I was stuck, repeating the same struggles without any change in my circumstances.

Each disappointment, every setback, felt like a heavy weight holding me back in the grade life had assigned me. The desire to give up grew exponentially; I wanted to abandon this life that seemed to continuously challenge me with insurmountable exams. I tried many times to release myself from her grasp and her classroom, tempted to play truant and run away. But, just as a truant officer would do, life had a way of finding me and bringing me back—often to a place that felt even more intimidating than her classroom, the principal’s office, where harsh realities awaited.

It was during one of those difficult times in my life that I finally grasped the profound lesson: life was my teacher, and I needed to accept her lessons daily. I learned that every day I breathe, I am here to learn, and this process of learning would never truly cease for me. My teacher, in her infinite wisdom, sees something in me that I do not yet perceive, a potential and a promise for growth that I often overlook amidst the chaos of my journey. This realization transformed my perspective; I became a lifelong learner, embracing each new challenge as an opportunity for growth and understanding. I learned to appreciate not just the successes, but also the trials as integral components of my education. In reflections on my life, I found wisdom in the struggles, recognizing that they shape my understanding and resilience, ultimately preparing me for whatever lies ahead on this unpredictable journey we call life.

Sincerely,m
